I know I'll be using some japanese words that I know will need translation and I will be doing that. My main concern are the basic japanes words/phrases. I have a feeling we'll be nearing or close to the 7 thousand word limit.

I'll be using basic japanese words like 'sugoi' and such. I can use those without translation right?

This is just a personal thing with me, but it's better if you DON'T use foreign phrases. It just flows better and makes it easier for people to read without having to think about what a certain word means or look up a glossary of terms. Not everyone feels this way, but it's one of the things that bothers me personally.

I had replied to this earlier but it didn't go through ;_; Here is the truncated version:
You aren't supposed to use any Japanese phrase that can be translated to English. Not everyone will understand the Japanese terms, and even if they did it's a bit silly to use them when the characters are otherwise speaking English and there are perfectly acceptable English words to use instead. IMO the only time it can be used is honorifics (and even then its sketchy) or when there is no English equivalent (words like katana and sushi). That's my interpretation of the rules although I think it's a good rule of thumb for writing fics in general. |

I completely agree with Tabby.
The rule says "No mixing languages unless appropriate or if there is no proper translation of a term - otherwise write in English. If you use unfamiliar terms in other languages, provide a handy dictionary at the start." I pretty sure that means that you can't use a non-English word if there is a translation, and that if you use a word that doesn't have a translation, then, provide a mini-dictionary so we know what it means. |

Pretty much it's summed up here - don't mix and match unless it's appropriate (ie if the character tends to mix-and-match languages). It can make it very hard to read for our editors and often dilutes your work.
Some people find terms difficult to translate, however, and then as noted provide some convenient translations. This is useful as it shows when you deviate from this rule for the simple fact there IS no equivalent, or if you'd loose a cultural context. |

thx for the reply ^_^
I think I can make the 7k limit and I already removed some words or put explanation with some of the words in the story. I would still keep some of the terms though since these are terms in the anime itself and better than just 'sword' for bleach's zanpakutou term for the shinigamis' swords (as an example). 7k limit is just the story itself (and the glossary if I'm going to add it). summary is still separate right? |

How about the glossary? is it also part of the 7000-word limit?
