I officially got 10/20, but due to some recognition problems it should have been 14/20. I e-mailed the exam administrator about the problem.
No idea if each exam for each participant is unique, though. Good luck to everyone else! Hopefully 14/20 is enough to get me in... |

Arrrrrrrgh. I could have done so much better than the people who went up. I'm mad at myself because I didn't do well on the exam.
I knew about two-thirds of the answers, and wouldn't have wildly guessed like all three seemed to do. I was expecting the leader to have over $10k by Final Jeopardy. Instead, we got half that. Here were the scores heading into Final Jeopardy: Girl on left: $2200 Guy in middle: $2800 Guy on right: $5100 I couldn't believe that the guy on the right at the end made a very stupid bid. If the guy in the middle bids all his money and wins, he ends up with $5600. Therefore, the guy on the right should have bid $501 to cover this. If both guys get it right, the guy on the right wins with $5601. If both guys get it wrong, the guy on the right wins even if the girl on the left bids all of her money. The girl on the left would normally have no chance to win. But the guy on the right bid all his money. Since no one got it right, the recommended bid, $501, would have won. Instead, the girl got a rather undeserving win. =_= I'll make it my mission to get into the next Anime Jeopardy. Boo hoo... =( Suggestions: - Get someone to spellcheck the answers next time. PACTIO = PRACTO? Are you kidding me? - Invoke the "Smith Rule" next time. Don't ask for full names unless the name has a very common last name. For example, the Shuffle! question should have been "Rin" instead of "Rin Tsuchimi". No one got that question, but still. - REHEARSE! There really should have been no excuse for the host to fumble on all the Japanese. He should have run a dry rehearsal a couple of days beforehand in order to perfect his delivery. Instead, what we got was a host who seemed to be unprepared. - Faster pace. The current game had too much dead air, and clapping in between questions is not Jeopardy unless it's a daily double. By the way, questions about K-On are completely unfair. I believe you had three of them. It's fine to shove it in the 2008-2009 anime category, but other categories? The contestants should not be required to view fansubs in order to gain an advantage.

Actually, the guy with $2800 was on the right, that was me. >.>
I was kicking myself over the Final Jeopardy wager, believe me. My thinking was that if the guy in the middle decided to wager $0 in order to hold his lead, I could overtake him by $1 to win. I had $2800 and bid $2301, which would have given me $5101 if I'd been right on the answer. If I'd played it safe and wagered $0 though, I would have won. But oh well, I still had fun. I was also rather upset that the guy in the middle seemed to be as much of a Gundam fanboy as I am; I was sure I had a lock on a good lead when I saw that category pop up. If only I'd been a little faster on the draw... Also, I'll agree with you on the K-On questions. The only reason I was able to get the one in Anime's Next Top Model was because I saw some guys going around the con wearing "Mio Fanclub" t-shirts and asked them who Mio was. And yeah, I think as long as it's obvious you know the character's name that the first name should be sufficient. I got several answers just on knowing a single name. If the host can't even pronounce Japanese correctly, I don't think we should be expected to memorize full names when everyone knows "Yurika" is the captain of the Nadesico.

Just curious. What did you get on your exam? Just wondering what I'll need for next time. (I know you didn't get 20/20 because there was also a K-On
question in the exam. What is with the host's obsession with K-On?)
Anyway, some more thoughts... Complete fail: - "complete the lyrics" was a total dud. Nothing was answered correctly from that one. It didn't help that the sound bites did not end exactly on time. The "fill in the blanks" should have been limited to two blanks at most. That Lucky Star one was unnecessarily difficult and made me cringe. - "It happened at AN08" I thought this was going to test knowledge of the actual events that happened at AN08. Instead we got general trivia with a cosplay picture as a hint. Boo. - "mistake characters" I can't remember the exact name of the category, but it was characters dressed up as another character. The host delivery was awful. - Jirachi for the 1st round $1000 Pokemon question? This Pokemon had an entire movie made for it! I couldn't believe that none of the contestants got it, because it was the second-easiest one (after Wobbuffet) What I liked: "four shows/one character" Creative idea, solid stuff. By the way, it's not Poptan, it's Popotan. More proofreading next time, please. "Fear Factor" Good variety of thriller trivia here. Very surprised that none of the contestants got Lucy from Elfen Lied. But hey, someone got the When They Cry answer. Elfen Lied is the #6 rated anime of all-time on animenfo and there should have been no excuse to miss it as a $400 question. http://animenfo.com/statistic/top.php?type=anime "Gundam" I stink at Gundam trivia, but I recall that all five questions were answered correctly, so it was successful. I think with a faster pace and crisp delivery you could put in two games in one hour. TV Jeopardy does a full game in 22 minutes and it even has time for player anecdotes. |

GipFazed wrote:After accounting for the errors on how the exam was scored, I got 15/20. Though actually I had no idea I was a contestant until I showed up at the event; I never did receive an e-mail or any kind of notification. I'm not sure if that was due to some sort of error or if my spambox ate the notice or what. I would have gotten the first one on "Complete the Lyrics" if I'd understood what the hell was being asked for the category. It also didn't help that I could barely hear the sample of the song that was played. I actually know the lyrics to a lot of songs, though it doesn't help if none of the songs I know are in the category. I was pretty sure I could have gotten the Black Lagoon one right, but then the answer was accidentally put up on the screen. "Mistake Characters" was another one that I had no clue WTF we were supposed to answer until one or two questions were asked. And even then I didn't know most of them. I've actually seen Elfen Lied just recently, but for the life of me I couldn't recall Lucy's name. It was right there on the tip of my tongue. I'm pretty sure I was pounding the table and cursing to myself at the time, lol... As for Pokemon though, I stopped watching it years ago and frankly I stay the hell away from it most of the time. If there had been more questions involving the original 151 then I would have done much better.
