( too much travelling. argh. argh. ) I realized, "holy poop I'm out of the loop!" And so, to humour a sad, sad alley staff member, post what you think are the current series and/or games that will be popular this year! I myself am very much a gamer so the anime world to me is very foreign as of late. I guess people are still into the whole Final Fantasy thing, right? Of the new stuff, it seems to me like there isn't one dominant anime to rule them all. Here are my speculations based on what I've seen on other message boards: Code Geass might be big since it was fairly recently licenced and was hugely successful in Japan. I thought Haruhi Suzumiya would be super huge last year but, despite the fact that AN even held a dance contest in its honour, (As well as sales of the dvd on amazon.ca rocketing) I didn't see an over abundance of Haruhi cosplayers, at least roaming the AA. Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann as well as Lucky Star might be big too. Some of the problems are that what's huge on message boards isn't what's huge for the general public. Oh man, I'm rambling now. Time change is making my brain wander in weird directions. Ok. So some of the series, though not necessarily all new, that I've noticed that lots of people seem to interested in via forums: D. Grayman Mobile Suit Gundam 00 Spice and Wolf Sayonara Zetsubo Sensei CLANNAD When They Cry/Higurashi no Naku Koro Ni Shigofumi Macross Frontier Moyashimon Hayate Combat Butler Bamboo Blade Shakugan no Shana You may want to be wary of people asking for Kodomo no Jikan commissions. Anyways, I think we're all okay as long as we have something on our tables from Naruto or Bleach.

Heh, I was thinking to put Ouran, but I wasn't sure if it's re-gained it's popularity just yet because the animehas not yet been officially released to the North American market. Funimation says 2008, but I don't know if it's before or after AN. I know the manga is there but still, with the anime out, it'll be a bigger push. So yeah, with the current limited (sleepy) brain power I'm running on, I'm just trying to figure out what's piquing. ^^; I did, however, forget to mention Fate/Stay Night. XD But now I recall that controversy with Seven Seas. The name just didn't stick. As for popular stuff, I really stopped gaming the past year or two and I don't watch that much anime. But I try to follow manga. Claymore was becoming popular, probably because its Shonen Jump and it's got the "chicks with giant swords" thing down pat. It has yet to reach Naruto or Bleach level epic following, but they've got the anime out so that's a step. I should think Avatar will be really hot come May, with the end of the third season/show. Of course, the stuff I really like is either old or has a small following.

For example, I'm not a fan of any of the Big Three (which I concur is Naruto, Death Note, and Bleach) so unless I find myself having finished all the prints I already want to do, then I probably won't do anything for them. The way I look at it too, is that because those three are SO popular, chances are the guy/girl sitting next to you has taken note and has prints of it already. And because "someone will always be a better artist than you" (I'm not being pessimistic, this is true), chances are THAT person has done art for it, and it becomes a matter of "which of the Bleach art is better". So if you're looking to draw Bleach art, do something original, something innovative. Everyone and their brother has done art of Ichigo powering up or with his mask or something, find a way to put a spin on it. I'm mostly a fan of the good old classics meself. It's a blessing and a curse though, as people will always remember Sailor Moon but as the fandom gets younger, they have not heard of or refuse to watch things that predate 2000. I've spoken to a number of people who will watch the Escaflowne Movie but refrain from watching the series because it's "not as clean" or it's "ugly". It breaks my heart. All this to say... I had good luck and bad luck selling what I like. But man did I have fun drawing everything. Why waste your time miserably picking away at art for an anime you never liked?

But when you have a mix, its safe. I think we've all tried to balance it right, and had hits and misses, and learned from it. Here's my personal pros and cons list of material in the alley.. ^^ Popular Fanart : A lot of us probably have a stab at stuff that's popular this year, but I've found that people who are interested in buying prints really do know if you're a fan of the series or character. It really shows through. However, if you really like the design of a character, you could make something brilliant, and people will respond to that. Drawing popular stuff might save your butt too, it can support some of your stuff that you'd otherwise be too afraid to sell exclusively, like if you wanted to try crafts for your first time. But one downside, if you think drawing a bandaged-shirtless-winged-Sasuke is a good idea (at all) you might see it at 20 other tables. XD Classic/Old/Cult/Original Fanart : As artists, we all know the sinking feeling when people like your Sasuke-eating-spaghetti drawing more than say, your original doujinshi, or fanart from your favourite anime 8 years ago. But when someone comes along and really appreciates your Mosquiton-eating-spaghetti drawing, or your original comic, it really adds more to the AA experience than anything.

Posts: 103 (03/13/08 09:35 AM) Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Luckily I'm usually a fan of stuff that is generally known, as oppose to lesser-viewed anime (with exception to The Twelve Kingdoms, which apparently has a fandom consisting of about 100 people). Fruits Basket, Escaflowne, Trigun. People generally know those types, and it's always so nice to hear "Oh man, I am SICK of all this Narutard art, it's so great to see a Cowboy Bebop print!" Still, the fandom dictates our earnings, right? And I agree with you, people can see right through you when you're a fan or not a fan of something. That generic Sasuke pose example was awesome. But don't forget to include an equally winged and shirtless Naruto in the mix. Images of those two together in "more-than-friends" poses litter the main page of my DA almost everytime I log in.

My taste in series is all over the map, from known stuff to lesser known. One of my favourite more recent series is one called "Bartender". Part of me is tempted to request a commission for a Margarita but I'm sure that's not allowed! XD ...also, I often watch people's eyes glaze over when I mention "Five Star Stories" or "Night on the Galactic Railroad". Anyway, in our personal case, we don't sell fan art or take commissions, however, helping to put together this list at least puts to use the geek knowledge rolling in my brain. (i.e. "Hey, I didn't waste my brain space remember them...not that I have control over that, but still!") Looking at n3om0nk1's initial post, it's probably a good list for those taking commissions and want to at least famliarize themselves with what's appealing these days...unless you're limiting your commissions to only things you enjoy, which really isn't a bad thing either. I personally sold a mix of my own stuff and fan art last year. I found my best-selling print though was a picture of Momiji in Mountie garb that I did as an entry for the design contest in 2006. Clearly I underestimated the power of patriotism in marketing. In the end I draw what I like, but it's interesting to see what is the Big New Thing every year at the con and it helps me identify just what it is people are cosplaying.
