"Competition entries must have premiered no earlier than November 1st, 2006", this was for last year's contest, so for this year, it would be November 1st, 2007. So long as your video hasn't premiered before that, you're fine.

I was sure I had already replied to this post, but it's been eaten somehow. First, I'd like to reassure people that there will be a competition this year. For a general guideline in getting started, please consult the 2007 rules. We don't change the basic criteria much from year to year. But make sure you read the 2008 rules once they're posted. This year, we're making a few technical changes and I'd like to restrict the kinds of trailers we accept. The premiere date is November 1, 2007. If you've posted your video to YouTube after this date then you can submit your video for competition. However, if you posted it before that date, then we can only show it as an Exhibition. I made an Anime Music Video in the summer (July) and posted it on YouTube with the intention of submitting it to Anime North. Darnit. ): If I make any changes to it, then can I submit it? Also, in the past, I've seen music videos entered in competitions that premiered at conventions that far exceeded that date. How long has this rule been around for? ----------- There's nothing more exhilarating than pointing out the shortcomings of others, is there?

When I first got involved in the comp, the premiere date was supposed to be Jan.1. A January date would've ensured that only new videos were entered. Since I was confused by the concept, it was one of the things I wanted clarification on. Once I understood what 'premiere date' was supposed to represent, I petitioned for the date to be moved back to November 1, where I think it had been before (but I'm not sure). Through judging, I noticed that some videos were quite old (perhaps 'made-the-previous-year-but-missed-the-deadline' old) and I was informed that we didn't really enforce the rule, it was there more as a guideline to solicit new videos only, those that hadn't been around the contest circuit picking up all the old awards. Since this was the intent, I decided we needed to enforce the rule because we didn't have another rule prohibiting submission of videos that had previously won awards. I decided that 6mos was a fair lead-in, so that videos would be fresh enough for the con, but that people who had accidentally posted their videos before the rules are posted (usually in Dec or Jan) wouldn't be penalized. That's also why the date won't change. It wouldn't be fair to post the rules in December saying that premiere date has moved to January, when meanwhile everyone has started posting their videos in November, for example. I believe that rules exist to be enforced. Last year I created a criterion for disqualification and ineligibility. This is a competition and part of competing is the following of rules to ensure a level playing field. So to answer your question, your video is currently ineligible to compete. You can still enter it as an Exhibition though. If you still want this to be your competition submission, you can revise it. But we should be able to see a significant difference between the two videos. Tightening it up and just making it better doesn't count as a revision -- it's editing. That would be cheating since you would have an unfair time advantage for 'perfecting' your video.

Someone could have, technically, been working on a video since the day after the previous Anime North and submitted it to this upcoming one. I had no idea YouTube was a 'premiere'. On YouTube I could have gotten zero views. I think 'premiere date' shouldn't be YouTube, but should definitely be at another con. There should definitely be a rule about the video being in other competitions, but YouTube isn't a competition. However, YouTube is a public forum and falls under our definition of 'premiered' since we want to attract relatively new videos that haven't been seen much. Some cons have exclusivity rules (meaning you can only enter their contest or your video must be shown there first), ours doesn't, so this is how we restrict submissions.

D: Just so you know, "premiere" by normal definition is to make a video available to the general public, and last I checked, YouTube, is accessible by the general public. Even if you get zero views, the potential for it to gain views by the general public remains. It is no different to uploading your video to AMV.org and not getting any views, you still could get some. In the end, "premiering" has nothing to do withing viewing itself, but more with the potential for the general public to view it. Now, you also mention an "editing date". That isn't important for this competition, and never was, and never has been. The rules care about the premiering, so that you can't enter a video that you made and showed off at the previous years convention, because you could have very easily won the overall video award and went "well, I should just enter that one again". What's the point? You're only cheating yourself by doing that, if anything. Now, if you were to start a video two years ago and then not finish it until now, that would be fine. So long as you haven't made it available to the public during that entire time, you'd be fine. Getting someone to beta a video(and as a student of film, you should know what a beta is, right?) doesn't count as premiering, because a beta isn't the general public. However, if you made it available to the public, got a bunch of people to review it, then you fix up your errors, that wouldn't count(I'd presume, Kieop would have to confirm this) because you're getting public review, not beta. Unless you were to radically change your video, which isn't likely because a beta/review will only make you fix timing issues, not entire sequences. As to the premiere rule. I fully support the rule. I'd even support it if they made it even stricter. YouTube is still a public site, thus hosting a video there before the deadline is forfeiting your right to use it. As Kieop has said, some conventions do have exclusivity rules, and if Anime North were to decide that they want that, I'd support it. None of the videos that I have entered, have ever premiered before Anime North, their showing at the convention(finals, because I rock that hard ;P j/k) is their very first public viewing, before that it is only a select few of betas(2 or 3) that see my video to catch any glaring issues I've had, as well as quality check for the video source and audio. Now, like I said, if they were to put in the rules that a video had to premiere at Anime North, I'd support it. I'd also support that it could premiere at Anime North or any other convention of that year(in this case, any convention before Anime North within 2008). However, the main problems with this is keeping track of it all. I'd also support(and would love to see) the premiere date moved to January 1st, because honestly, an editor should be able to hold their video from public view that long. Not to mention, people should be able to read the rules. Since you can read AN07s rules still by going to the archive. The easiest way to switch the date without causing an uproar, would be to post the change on the main page of the convention website as well as on the forums, right after the convention is over. This way people will see the new rules, even if they wait until later in the year, the archived news on the main page will show the new rule, thereby alerting them to it. If they can't handle a simple rule change that is told to them nearly a year in advance, then too bad for them personally. I mean, like you said, the entire thing is editing.

I found this part confusing unless you mean that it would count as premiered? Beta reviews are not public, so they don't count as having premiered. If the video is available to the public, it has premiered. Whether people review the video or not after it has premiered doesn't really matter. Whether the video is edited again or not doesn't really matter. A video premiered before Nov.1 cannot be entered competitively. I'm sorry I confused the issue by mentioning the loophole. The only reason I mentioned revisions is that if you significantly alter the video (ie make new sequences), then one could argue that it is a different video that hasn't premiered. We really don't want to encourage this though, because then people could just keep recycling old winning videos in different permutations. The result would be very stale. So just don't do it. In regular film festivals, you can premiere your stuff halfway through the year and still enter it in as many festivals as possible up until the next half year. I do not see why public premiere is such an issue. I understand you don't want people submitting videos that won from conventions the year before, but it is absolutely ridiculous that there has to be a premiere date of November. SuperS4 suggesting that the public premiere date should be January is even more ridiculous. It's like we live in this little bubble, a subsection where we are allowed to essentially steal copyrighted music and video and make our own combination (because hey, no matter how you try to swing it, you're breaking copyright laws with public viewings of protected content), but we're not allowed to publicly premiere it on YouTube. There should be at LEAST one year. I should be able to premiere it after anime north on YouTube or whatever without it being an issue. Regular film festivals run that way. There is no reason we shouldn't run in a similar matter at all. ----------- There's nothing more exhilarating than pointing out the shortcomings of others, is there?

For sundance, you need scripts, location planning, story boards, actors/actresses, time to film and time to edit. For what happens at Anime North, the filming is done, all you have to do is a little bit of planning, and edit your little heart out. Notice the the differences in work load? It isn't much to ask for to ask people to not submit anything that hasn't premiered before November. I know other cons have variations of this rule as well. And really, If you just sit down and work on it, you can crank out a video pretty quickly (depending on how flashy/effecty you make it ofcourse :P) But don't forget that even though you can't compete in to competition, you can still submit it as an exhibition video.

Some people will create an AMV every few days, whereas I'm quite certain the people at Sundance are not making 20-30 videos a year. They will work on their one video basically the entire time. Granted, I'm sure some do make a few a year, but still far less then amateur AMV editors. 2) Stop comparing anime conventions AMV contests to regular film festivals, they're different things. They're going to have different rules, just like one anime convention will have differing rules to Anime Norths. It is up to those in charge to determine what they feel will result in the best contest they can create. 3) Your comment "I understand you don't want people submitting videos that won from conventions the year before", well, you do realize, there are conventions in November and December, correct? It wouldn't seem like it, since your entire line right there just contradicted itself if you were to admit to knowing such information. There were I believe, around 4-6 conventions between November 1st and December 31st of 2007. Which leads me into the next point: 4) My suggestion would remove any chance that someone would be able to enter their video into a convention at the end of the previous year. Thus removing one issue that Anime North tries to keep at bay. H 5) " ... but we're not allowed to publicly premiere it on YouTube." this likely has nothing to do with copyright laws. I seriously doubt Anime North really cares about copyright law infractions which you are creating by making an AMV. They are just trying to stop old videos from entering into a contest. 6) "There should be at LEAST one year". At 'least', that would mean you should be allowed more? So I should be able to enter a video I premiered 5 years ago and have worked on for those 5 years to perfect it? That is what you're saying. Honestly, maybe it is just me, but your entire post is coming off as nothing but whining because you didn't read the rules and found out your video is ineligible. In the end, Anime North is kind enough to run the AMV contest for us editors do enter, they make the rules which they feel are going to bring in the best videos that they can get, while keeping it competitive. If you have an issue with this, I, as a fellow editor with no affiliation with the convention proper aside from being someone who competes and attends, would suggest you not enter. Because obviously you don't find their rules suiting to your view on how contest rules and guidelines should be. If you find it such a big issue, just don't enter, but don't complain about it because your video isn't allowed to enter because of your own mistake. But seriously, why is it every year, someone has to have some issue with something about the contest? This year it's the deadline, last year it was "why can't we find out if we're a finalist/winner before the convention", the year before that we also had an issue with formats/resolutions and a member was banned from the forum because of it.

But if you post it to a public forum before November 1st, it is ineligible to compete. Anime North is a large venue, so even if you are ineligible to win awards, it is a great place for your video to be seen by a live audience.

Have you read anything about copyright laws? I have them stoned into my head almost every day. It's copyrighted footage and copyrighted music being shown at a public venue without consent from the distributors . It's breaking the law. If anime conventions didn't generate so much income for distribution companies, they very well could swoop in and shut it down. Obviously they don't care, because this has been going on for ages, but it is technically against the law. I just find this bizarre more than anything. I am not going to enter my video, this much is true. Also, I know how this competition is judged so I don't even know why this is such an issue to me. "Oh, this person used AfterEffects and had a manga scan of Sakura jumping across the screen. It doesn't fit anything but BONUS POINTS!!! AFTER EFFECTS ROCKS!" I've dated someone who has been on the judging panel. Like hell I'm going to release who it is, because he is probably the nicest guy ever and I don't think he would appreciate the backburn if I told the entire forum what he has said about the judging process. They are the only con I know who cares enough about the AMV to promise to show EVERY SINGLE one. The devote tons of hours to AMVs. Last year (if I remember correctly) they had a 2 hour awards ceromony, with a 4 hour block of other entries, and a repeat of the awards ceremony, + the constant running of exhibition videos outside the dealers room. Somewhere sometime your video will be shown. If you ask me that justifies the strict rules. The rule in question is one that has been around for a couple years now. I am completely confident that had you privately messaged the co-ordinator, explained your situation and asked kindly for you video to be reconsidered, there's a good chance they would have bent the rules for you. But posting on here and flipping out, we'll I'm sure that isn't making anyone want to help you now. Juding will ALWAYS be subjective. I can't say I've agreed with alot of decisions over the years that I've attended, but for the most part AN has rewarded videos that are innovative and/or plain old fun to watch. I've never seen a video like you describe win. The AMV co-ordinators have always been completely open with us about the judging. How it's preformed, and even let us see our own scores after the contest is over. It's not a ideal or perfect judging system but I challenge you to come up with the be all end all system for judging AMVs. Finally, it does suck that your video wasn't entered. I'm sure you spent alot of time on it. If you really care about it, the last thing to do is complain. You had at least 3 weeks. You could have changed it, made it better and submited it as Version 2/Remasted, or you could have get started on a new one.
