One thing I do recommend though is that you print a test copy of each of your prints. It may get a little pricey but it's well worth it. I did that a few days ago and found that the place I go to seems to make my prints a little lighter. So I brought them home, compared the print to my computer screen and adjusted the art on my computer to match the printout. Then I wrote down the number that I adjusted it by.

I know exactly what you mean! Last year this came out all black, so the detail was lost... which is why my partner suggested do test prints like you said. My printing place is kinda far, so I'm gonna bring a few versions along, since I still have leftover prints as a guide. CMYK is another factor too, I had a Morrigan print that came out disappointing my first year printing, but that's nobody's fault but the paper for not possessing the power to glow. Aqua and other vibrant colours can print gucky, so I may have to play with the colours a little.
But I think you're right, printing early will take some stress off. But you see, I know I'll be printing more than once... once a week before, and then again right before the con. Unlike last year, I won't do *everything* last minute, just some ^^
