This might just be the trend. If I'm remembering correctly last year Novie and Open were about equal, but the year before that Novice had WAY more videos
that open. It'd be interesting to compare numbers over the last 4-5 years.

You're correct. In 2005 and 2006, Novice greatly outnumbered Open. Last year it was about equal. Can we inquire as to how many videos ended up getting DQ'd? Could that be the reason Novice is so low this time around? I understood your question to mean that you were wondering whether Novice people were being discouraged from entering because of the DQ policy, which is a possibility. There were 8 DQ's in 2007. Looking again, I see that it might also be interpreted to mean that the difference might be due to Novice videos being DQ'd this year. That is not the case. The totals given reflect total submissions received, not the number that qualified. I'm not releasing that number. Challenge entries doubled this year. Open stayed about the same. Novice was halved. It is important to stress that though the DQ policy might be contributing to scaring away novices, that is only one hypothesis for the drop and not all DQ's come from that category. Exhibitions can also be DQ'd by the way (although none were this year ~_^). Does anyone else have any theories about this possible trend of declining Novice entries? |

Well, I suppose one theory could be judging. I have heard some complaints about judging at AN, heck, I'll be the first to admit I've seen some videos
win that in my opinion, shouldn't have, and some videos make finalists that again, in my opinion shouldn't have. While I continue to enter, it could be
that some people just aren't willing to keep trying, they could feel its not worth it.
Could also have to do with several of the same people winning each year, again makes newcomers feel like their chances aren't that good. I suppose another might be with the rules and this forum. We had someone each year, for the past 3 years I think, have issues with the rule and complain about them here. This could, and I sincerely hope this isn't the case, discourage some people, this is very unlikely, but hey, it's always possible. Then there was the, rather awkward wording of the rules, or more to the point, the accepted and non-accepted formats and codecs, could easily have confused people. Or they may have spent all their time making a video, only to find out what they made it in isn't allowed and didn't know how or didn't have time to convert it to another format(unlikely, but, not implausible) It could just be that people didn't come up with good ideas, I know I left it to the last minute to get my video finished because I couldn't come up with an idea I liked enough to edit, then when I finally did, I honestly didn't think I had the time to finish it. Honestly, I'm going with the "didn't have time/ideas" as the most likely of causes. I'm sure it is actually going to be a bunch of various things that combined into a bigger one. Like not enough ideas, a few scared off by competition, some with issues with judges, stir it all together and you could easily lose a good number of videos that way.
