The theme for the night is Anime and Cosplay. Dance the night away! Come in Costume! Have a ball! Cosplayers welcome!! Many prizes to be won. Prizes include passes to Anime North 2008!!! There are 100 free slots for staff as of now. Must bring Staff badge and valid ID to get on list and into VIP lounge. I have to say, it was the worst judging I've ever seen. It seemed like she was just choosing at random. She wasn't even asking anyone what they were cosplaying as. I saw one person who had a kickass costume go away very upset because he was completely overlooked by the judge. Next year, I think a little more organization is called for. And have more than one person judging so there's a bit of fairness. I'm fairly certain one or two of the people picked as winners were picked because they were friends with the judge. We had to leave at 12:15 (live in mississauga, had to catch the subway) and had been there since about 10pm, and there were no announcements about the contests for dressing up, anime north, prizes or anything of that sort. We dressed up in our Kisame and Deidara outfits (from Akatsuki, Naruto) and did a little partner cosplay. Everyone there looked kickass, but there were only a few people who actually cosplayed and I was really disappointed that the whole time we were there, no mention was made of the contest. It felt like we dressed up in vain. I agree, more organisation, more AN related talk, and generally more announcements or something to talk about all these contests that were supposed to happen would have been good.

The rest of the club was dressed in regular garb (club wear). I remember you as well. Sorry that you did not get one....did you have a crown on? Some of the outfits were very nice. Some.....interesting ^_^ 13 people went away angry. Sorry....only had TWO passes to give away..... Everyone wants a pass and everyone thinks they should get one. I did the best I could with the set up the organizer gave me when I arrived. I had no say on how it was going to happen since I was not in charge. It was not organized by me. I was invited to give away 2 passes. Period. The when and how was up to the organizer. I do agree that there should have been an announcement. That would have made it easier for everyone..... In all honesty I had 2 passes to give away and NOTHING to do with the music selection, additional prizes or announcements. In fairness to the organizer he not only lost his original location (The Reverb) a week before, he also lost his donator for prizes about 1 hr before. So a lot of his original plans fell apart (the VIP party. Cake and prizes). The organizer himself was not an AN staff member nor affiliated with AN in any way. He is a well known club organizer in Toronto and wanted to try a new theme for his club night. Anime North seemed like a good idea to him. He wanted the AN staffers to come out and enjoy themselves. I saw you leave the club. You were coming down as I was going up (it takes me time to go up ^^). Twin Akatsuki outfits right? Both with straw hats? I went in with a fair assessment that I wouldn't win anything. However, it felt like I didn't even get a chance. (I'm assuming you were the judge) It appeared almost as if you were looking over everyone's heads for better cosplayers instead of looking at the people right in front of you. You probably weren't, but that was my initial reaction. Yes, believe it or not, I was cosplaying. I know it kinda looked like what all the other patrons were wearing, but I was cosplaying Halloweentown Kairi. Maybe it wasn't obvious because it was an original design based on Kairi's pink dress in KH2. But that aside, there was someone dressed as what looked like a Kingdom Hearts version of Sasuke. I happen to think that costume was boss and probably deserved to win. But that's just my opinion. That person only showed up for the cosplay contest and as soon as it was over, they left. This was the impression that I had going in. A) It was organized by the Anime North staff. That's what the flyers were saying. Apparently that was wrong. B) There would be J-Pop music. Once I heard it was going to be at the Savage, I quickly figured they wouldn't change their regular set for this event. C) When it came time for the cosplay contest, I thought we'd be lined up or something (like at the J-Pop Halloween dance), we'd get to announce who we were cosplaying, and we'd get to show off our costumes. I even went as far to think it might be judged by audience cheers. Again, I was wrong. D) There'd be more than one judge and they would award prizes based on creativity, costume construction, and/or accuracy to the character they're cosplaying. I'm not sure what your judging criteria was for that. I'm in no way blaming you for what happened. I'm not really trying to blame anyone at this point. I'm kinda glad you gave some background info as to why things didn't turn out the way some people were expecting. But when you get right down to it, there was nothing special about that night. It was just like any other Savage night I've gone to. Even some of the same tracks were played (not complaining because I love the music they play). In regards to the lack of cosplayers, it's probably because a lot of cosplayers and anime fans are under 19. Anyway, this is like a "whatever" thing to me now. When I ranted earlier, it was literally like 10 minutes after I left the place, so of course I was blowing off some steam. If I could give any advice, if this is done again next year, don't put Anime North's name on it if it's not going to be organized by AN staff. It puts a lot of assumptions in our heads of what to expect and it's a major let down when none of it happens. (That last part wasn't directed at you, Nihonjin, it's more of a general thought.) Ya, we were, we smiled at the people going up so that may have been you, how funny :P It makes a lot of sense that the event wasn't judged by AN. Thanks for giving all of the background info - it sounds like it was intended to be better then what came out in the end, what with the club event runner losing the sponsor for prizes - that would explain why the "lots of prizes and giveaway's" advertised in the flyer were nowhere to be seen. In the end I agree with kuko chan's impression of what they were expecting from the event. It wasn't beyond reason to assume that the event was to be run by anime north, as the logo and namesake is all over the flyer. I understand that you aren't to blame for a lot of this, nihonjin24, and as you know we weren't there for judging so I can't speak for that. But after we left we really felt like we had just gone to any other club - that happened to be playing an anime movie. Dressing up is always fun, and we didn't come "just to win", we came to have fun. But we also had a hope of winning something (we didn't really care about weekend passes, we already have ours, but more about the "other prizes and giveaways" for costumes). It was just disappointing that after taking the time to dress up that there were only 2 prizes and they were handed out so late.

That wasn't the issue. Organization was the issue. Out of curiosity, what exactly was the judging criteria? How were the winners chosen? There were 15 costumes and between the other staff, DJ, club owner and myself we chose one that caught our eye. That is all. There were no ballots or numbers. It was just a harmless "hay that looks cool! What do you think?" and then it was given to the winner. I am sorry if you expected a more detailed competition but it was never advertised as such.

The costume that won the other was from the Anime Ninja Nonsense. Shinobu I think....It has been a while since I watch that show. They were not really category's to speak of. Just a random "wild" outfit and an "Anime gem". Her costume was very accurate. Plus she even pulled of a good pose for the picture ^_^ Very cute!
