MOMIJI'S CHALLENGE 2008 Our mascot sure loves a technical challenge! Recently, she was shocked to learn that the animation she loves so much is made up of sequences of cell frames, creating the illusion of motion. She wants to study the kinetics of stillness. This year's challenge is to create an animated music video using nothing but still images and special effects. Possible sources include manga, wallpapers and still frames. Please refrain from submitting slideshows; your video must feel animated in some way. Due to the painstaking nature of this challenge and the lack of time left in which to complete it, we are lifting the minimum length restriction. This year, Challenge videos may be less than one minute in length. Otherwise, all other standard judging criteria apply, so please try to conform to our quality guidelines. The winner will receive the Momiji's Challenge Award. Good luck!

I am interested in this idea, but can also see the horrors of it. This is certainly one of the more challenging challenges put out thus far, in the sense that, to pull this off really well, is going to take a lot more work then previous challenges that weren't so much of a "challenge", but a sub-category with "old footage". Anyways, thanks for the heads-up about the challenge. One other question. Entry restrictions. Are you going to be allowing multiple entries, ie one into challenge and one into another category, or are you only going to allow one entry per editor regardless of category?

Posts: 24 (01/21/08 03:57 PM) Moderator Reply Quote More My Recent Posts Message Me Connection Blocking Invite Ignore User's Posts	Well, I'm hoping that people who will take the time to make a Challenge video will put an effort into making a coherent work of art. I'm not going to make a restriction on mininum length, because I doubt I will get a lot of 5s blurbs. Lifting the mininum length restriction will allow people the freedom to make the video as long as it needs to be for them to express what they hope to express with it. I don't think people are going to make videos that are too short just for the sake of entering the Challenge. If you can make a good 20s video, that's okay. If you can't, then don't. Commercials tend to be between 30-50s, and so I think a coherent video can be made of that length. Of course, people are encouraged to make videos as long as they'd like, as well (up to 6 min, of course). I was just worried that two and half months may not be enough time to make a really good full length music video of this type, but for those who can, please do. As for entry restrictions in general... Last year's rules apply again this year. One Competitive video (Novice or Open) and one Challenge or Exhibition video. So you can't enter two videos in one category, nor can you enter a Novice and an Open, nor can you enter a Challenge and an Exhibition. So it's two videos total per entrant. Hope that clears things up.

PUSH BUTTAN RECEIVE AMV anywho aside from that, I really can't wait to see what kinds of things result from this contest, I know we'll get some good stuff! (I think I might try my hand at it)

The only problem I can see with that is our rule about having 2/3 Japanese source material. So if your frames constitute about a third of the video, you'll be fine. Unless, of course, you're Japanese, then it's all good. Email the video@animenorth.com address and let me know in more detail what you want to do, so that I can answer more effectively.
