tiikay: I totally understnad not wanting to watch it because it's too long. I'm doing a weekly showing of it at my university right now (10 eps a week) and I started at episode 80 because you can get enough out of flashbacks and whatnot that you really don't need to watch the (crappy in comparison) beginning. 80-120 and then 40 eps of Shippuuden (the "new" Naruto series) is not quite as bad, though that's still 80...

We don't hate you! I believe that if an artist wants to draw something then they can go ahead. I know what it feels like to try and do something creative for something you really don't want anything to do with, so it's better to just draw what you want. :3 If anything, I haven't watched Naruto and I'm scared to start because there are so many episodes now... so there's no point XD I like short series.

I stopped by the MTAC today and I'm with mokulen22's suggestion of High School Host Club. I noticed quite a few Ouran cosplayers as well as people clutching Hani's pink bunny. XD

There's probably quite a few Phoenix Wright fans out there too.

I don't think I've ever been too worried about what's too popular (though I haven't done an artist alley in foreverssss... @_@)... It's more fun to draw fanart that I actually want to draw... and I guess it does help one to stand out a little, rather than 100 artists with all the same characters over and over... xD I like seeing more unusual stuff and original stuff in the AA, as a browser (I'd like to say as a shopper, but always so broke, heh... :<)

I personally sold a mix of my own stuff and fan art last year. I found my best-selling print though was a picture of Momiji in Mountie garb that I did as an entry for the design contest in 2006. Clearly I underestimated the power of patriotism in marketing.

In the end I draw what I like, but it's interesting to see what is the Big New Thing every year at the con and it helps me identify just...

My taste in series is all over the map, from known stuff to lesser known. One of my favourite more recent series is one called "Bartender". Part of me is tempted to request a commission for a Margarita but I'm sure that's not allowed! XD ...also, I often watch people's eyes glaze over when I mention "Five Star Stories" or "Night on the Galactic...

Luckily I'm usually a fan of stuff that is generally known, as oppose to lesser-viewed anime (with exception to The Twelve Kingdoms, which apparently has a fandom consisting of about 100 people). Fruits Basket, Escaflowne, Trigun. People generally know those types, and it's always so nice to hear "Oh man, I am SICK of all this Narutard art, it's so great to see a Cowboy Bebop print!"

Still, the fandom dictates our earnings, right? And I agree with you, people...

I think the majority of people here really do enjoy drawing fanart from their favourite old anime, or original work, as opposed to what's popular and may sell more. But when you have a mix, its safe. I think we've all tried to balance it right, and had hits and misses, and learned from it. Here's my personal pros and cons list of material in the alley.. ^^

Popular Fanart : A lot of us probably have a stab at stuff that's popular this year, but I've found that...
